Personal Information

My name is Harrison and I am currently a graduate student studying Strategic Communications. I'm fascinated by the different ways people communicate with one another, so I started this site to cover exactly that. I've spent most of my college career studying and working in various  communication mediums; my undergraduate was in film production, I work on film sets, I minored in English and hold a certificate in new media studies. One of the biggest takeaways after this experience is that people rarely think about what the media they consume is trying to say, or how it says it. Every week I will be posting about topic such as emerging forms of media, communication strategies, academic theories I find compelling. If I'm eloquent enough, hopefully, I will give any potential readers new insight into how they communicate with the worked or how media can affect them. What's Next?

I recently completed the strategic communication course that this site was created for. So now I face a particular dilemma, what will this blog be about going forward? To be clear this does not mean I am considering terminating this blog or that I will just stop posting now that I have fulfilled some arbitrary academic requirements. Instead, I am reassessing what I can do with this site now that I no longer have a weekly deadline to meet. For many people this might mean a lack of motivation (there’s no better motivation to write than a deadline, after all) but for others, it can mean freedom from restrictions. I’m not sure if I lean in either particular direction, but I do feel that it is time to change how I approach this blog. For starters, I will not be posting on a regular week by week basis. Personal Branding: Auteurs and Authenticity

  Personal branding is now instrumental in successfully navigating the job market. Branding used to be the exclusive domain of corporations and their attempts to highlight their product or service. Now that social media has made everyone more interconnected, individuals must also create their own brands, but now the products are themselves (Castrillon). Which means that people have to take the features of social media, which allow you to curate your life, and take it to the most extreme end. Every tweet is an extension of your core ideas, every photo part of a larger story. The result is a precarious balancing act between the needs for personal branding and the truth of your interiority. There is always the danger of relying too much on branding as an end to itself. Perils of Technology on Younger Minds

  Technology is so omnipresent today that it is easy to take it for granted, especially when it comes to the relationship children and young adults have with it. Research shows that children are now beginning to become aware of their online presence as early as grade school (Lorenz). Mobile devices and online content can provide a much deserved respite for overworked parents, or open up new opportunities for children to learn about the world and teach themselves.
